The scheme is a fit out to a 213sqm ground floor tenancy within a newly completed residential mixed use development in Coppin St, Richmond.
The space was a rectilinear concrete box with an East – West alignment and tight floor to floor heights which presented a challenge in terms of space planning and deliniation. Our brief was to design a warm and inviting space with natural materials and defined zones.
The idea of inverting the new within the old resonated, which resulted in the central placement of a distressed ‘barn – like’ box housing the kitchen and associated back of house. Ceiling height restrictions informed keeping the floor level and creating zones with ceiling bulkheads and built-in furniture. We expressed perspective where possible to control focus and further emphasize the zoning.
Our interest in the use of natural materials to create warm yet contemporary spaces which age gracefully, informed the palette of polished concrete, rough sawn mesmate timber, plywood, honed carrara marble and titanium zinc.
