The scheme consists of 12 tri level townhouses on a long narrow site in the burgeoning suburb of East Brunswick, Melbourne.
The new building is tucked behind an existing refurbished factory which is typical within this inner city precinct. Our first decision was to treat the existing factory in muted tones of white and grey to form a canvas for the new colourful inserts which we considered to be an expression of the vibrant and exciting suburb.
Ship lapped Silver top ash timber and smooth face render in Dulux Bladed Grass clad the exterior of the new build whilst brightly coloured entrances offer a counter to the organic materiality of the exterior.
The townhouse layouts are modulated, with north facing pop out windows adjacent to the East facing pedestrian entrance walkway, therefore it was critical to offer an identity to each pair of entrances, and, provide a rhythm to the journey from street to door. Energetic and contrasting colours achieve this design objective.
The building is a respective amalgamation of the historic and the new which we hope, by means of the selected pallet, will grow old gracefully as the suburb around it evolves.
