2 Storey extension to an existing single storey Edwardian home in the heritage precinct of Rathdowne St, Carlton North. The proposal converts the existing 3 bedroom home into a 4 bedroom with study, family area and off street parking.
The key design generator was to maximise northern aspect. The addition is conceived as a slender rectangle form tucked behind the existing building; ‘open’ to the northern facade and ‘closed’ to the south. A double storey void over the dining area creates volume in a narrow space, and allows the building to breathe through the operable facade at the upper level.
The ‘cranked’ decorative screens provide a solution to overlooking at the North, whilst allowing controlled views from the bedrooms to the garden below. The finer grain of these screens offset the slick black box of the upper level which is perched on a timber base. The timber will soften with age to ensure full visual integration with the garden area and planting.
