Renovation of an existing first floor apartment to provide a new kitchen, bathroom and laundry.
Our brief was to create a contemporary, functional renovation with function contained within the existing spaces. Due to the constraints of working within an existing apartment building, it was decided early on in the design process that the proposal should use as much of the existing services as possible, which in turn informed the final location of most fittings.
Our first decision was to open up the kitchen to the dining area by way of a galley type arrangement, and move the laundry from the bathroom to the rear of the kitchen behind a concealed door. The new arrangement clarifies circulation and offers a much clearer relationship between the kitchen and dining areas.
The existing separate powder room was demolished to create one larger bathroom, with the constraint of the existing service stacks and runs being concealed by a feature wall at the WC, an under bench dummy wall behind the vanity bench, and a stone box to the bath linked to the cascading stone vanity bench.
The clients expressed an interest in a natural colour scheme, which informed the contained palate of natural tones, stone and bamboo. The renovation is complete with a new Blackbutt timber flooring throughout, finished in a water based satin coating.
