The development comprises of 3 sites situated in a prominent position on the Eastern side of Mt Alexander Road, Essendon, Victoria.
The scheme is a masterplan of all sites generating from the re-development of the existing Brickmakers Arms Hotel, which seeks to reclaim the Hotel as a key focal point for the community. Three residential buildings create a uniform and focused streetscape with a gradual height increase to the Hotel Facade.
Site 1 is a three storey boutique 4 unit residential building with associated offices at ground floor and Site 2 is a four storey 15 unit residential building with offices at ground floor. Site 3 is consists of four levels of 24 apartments above offices and the Brickmakers Arms Cafe / restaurant at ground floor.
The Architectural language is informed by the decision to balance building identity with clarity of materiality and detail. Heritage is respected on Site 3 by revealing and restoring the existing Brickmakers Arms facade. A glass vertical canopy heralds the new entrance and ensures a delicate interface between the old and the new. The titanium zinc clad facade gestures towards the heritage as a contemporary interpretation of the existing.
