Project Brief

This brown field infill site of 250sqm is situated on a small laneway positioned in the heart of North Melbourne. Our brief was to provide a residential building with as a high a yield as possible without compromising on the amenity. We proposed a zero carparking walkup development of 9 one bedroom apartments over 3 levels.

Our concept was to create a new insertion within the streetscape which acknowledges the past and present. We achieved this by making the Byron Street facade two distinct vertical blocks, each with opposing treatments. The Western side distressed timber facade is conceived as a reflection of the heritage precinct and is presented as an open ‘ruin’ like facade, whilst the Eastern side facade draws on the mass and rhythm of the existing streetscape and is skinned in a smooth cladding with coloured accents which gestures as a younger more playful element.
